When I coordinated the reformulation of the Integrated Master’s Program in Engineering and Management of Information Systems (a process that began in 2018), I compiled and produced a substantial collection of documents to support the effort.

Among these documents were several Computing competency frameworks, including the i Competency Dictionary (iCD), Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA), and European e-Competence Framework (e-CF).

As a European Norm (EN 16234-1), the e-CF defines 41 competencies relevant to the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) workplace. It offers a common language for describing competencies—knowledge, skills, and proficiency levels—that is widely understood across Europe.

A valuable companion to the e-CF is the publication European ICT Professional Role Profiles”. In this document, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) identified 30 ICT professional role profiles, including: Account Manager, Business Analyst, Business Information Manager, Chief Information Officer, Data Administrator, Data Scientist, Data Specialist, Developer, DevOps Expert, Digital Media Specialist, Digital Consultant, Digital Educator, Digital Transformation Leader, Enterprise Architect, ICT Operations Manager, Information Security Manager, Information Security Specialist, Network Specialist, Product Owner, Project Manager, Quality Assurance Manager, SCRUM Master, Service Support, Service Manager, Solution Designer, Systems Administrator, Systems Analyst, Systems Architect, Technical Specialist, and Test Specialist.

Each Profile is described in terms of a summary statement, mission, deliverables, main tasks, e-Competencies, and relevant KPI areas. I thought it would be useful to provide a global overview of these 30 e-CF-based ICT Professional Role Profiles.

To that end, I created a poster that offers an integrated view of the proficiency levels, process involvement, and competency affinities associated with each role. The results are, in some cases, thought-provoking...
